“Indeed, if a text is regarded as the Word of
God, it takes on depths of meaning and beauty and dimensions of such fullness as
the human mind cannot fully grasp. The preacher who digs below the surface of a
text to explore it depths will soon end up in the predicament of having more
material than the sermon can contain…And how helpful is this depth-probing of a
text. Nothing will do more to help one become a solid and enriched biblical
theologian. Superficial preaching on biblical generalities is profoundly
detrimental to the preacher. The
congregation gets little spiritual nourishment, and the preacher does not grow
in an understanding of the Word.” James Daane in Preaching with Confidence
